Tuesday stumper: It ran at Indy
Here’s what remains of what should be at least a moderately recognizable car, at least, it might be if there were more left. The new owner says the chassis (long gone) began its life in a car that ran at Le Mans in 1939, then it was raced at Indy in 1946. It was later raced by John Fitch, among others. Stumped? See the answer after the jump.
“Last fall I bought what remains of the body of the Lagonda Le Mans which ran at Indy in 1946,” says proud owner Steve Silverstein.
After Indy the car was owned by Dr Sabourian (sp?) who had John Fitch race the car for him – it was equipped with a Ford flathead. It was also raced by Erwin Goldschmidt and Sherwood Johnston (I believe Sherwood Raced it with a 331 Hemi) up until 1954-’55 (my best guess).
I had bought it with the intent of just hanging it up for display. I seriously considered chasing down another Lagonda V-12 Chassis from a limousine, but I think it will go back up on the wall.
Steve’s not afraid of a challenge, though, and I’m sure if you have a Lagonda chassis and engine hanging around taking up space, he’d be happy to say hi.
