This Day in History: First Ford Mustang produced
On March 9, 1964, the first Ford Mustang came off the production line. Although it was beaten to market by the Plymouth Barracuda, the hot-selling Mustang would quickly come to define the youthful performance market, even lending its nickname: pony car. A later press release exclaimed, “Styling and features of expensive European road cars are combined with an American mass-production price, compact economy, and traditional Ford quality in the Mustang — a new line of cars from Ford Division of Ford Motor Company.”
