“The roads aren’t exactly European, to put it mildly”
While fixing a link to a video in an old post, we came across a trove of British Pathe videos highlighting the East African Safari Rally throughout the 1960s. While they probably don’t tell us more about the rally than we already know – the roads were harsh and very few entrants crossed the finish line (and the best line, “See the zebras? That shows you’re in Africa”) – the footage, particularly of the last in the series, from 1971, gives the rally the visceral punch that the narrator’s dry wit can’t quite deliver.
