St. Petersburg, Florida, 1947
We normally associate the trend of drive-in this and drive-in that – restaurants, banks, theaters – with the 1950s, but as we see from this Joseph Janney Steinmetz photo on Florida Memory of the Pasadena Community Church in St. Petersburg, the trend dates back a little earlier. In fact, the church’s website notes that the drive-in services started in 1940 when the church built the “Garden Sanctuary” with space for 2,000 cars – originally intended to help the elderly or infirm who couldn’t make it inside the church itself for services.
