SIA Flashback – Versatile Workhorse: Volkswagen thinks big with its canvas-paneled 1962 Pick-Up

It makes visibility tough and causes a ruckus flapping in the wind, but the original canvas top – a factory option for the Volkswagen Type 2 Pickup – inspired the restoration of this particular daily driver 1,600cc-powered Pickup, which Mark McCourt profiled and drove for SIA #198, December 2003. Like the more common Volkswagen Transporter, the Pickup offered a cab-forward driving position that Mark describes perfectly for those more used to the standard driving positions.
