SIA Flashback – Elwood’s Enterprise: Creating the Successor to “America’s First Car” – the 1923 Haynes Sport Sedan
Incredibly, the 1923 Haynes Model 55 that Arch Brown and Bud Juneau wrote up for SIA #189, June 2002, appeared to have only been a two-owner car when the duo caught up to it sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Of course, it had been restored to its original condition, a stately six-cylinder automobile for its time with largely typical specifications but a boisterous legacy courtesy Elwood Haynes, the man who claimed to have first built an automobile in the United States. Brown has more of the story, along with some firsthand impressions from a drive in the Haynes.
