SIA Flashback – 1935 Chrysler Airstream: Ray Dietrich to the Rescue
After the Airflow’s commercial flop, Chrysler needed a quick redemption, and even something bog-standard would suffice. Not to say that the 1935 Chrysler Airstream – the Ray Dietrich-designed direct successor to the Airflow – didn’t have its virtues, but after reading Bud Juneau and Arch Brown’s assessment of a well-preserved eight-cylinder Airstream CZ in SIA #168, November 1998, it appears that Dietrich’s marching orders for the Airstream amounted to “Make it as un-outstanding as possible.” And, as we see from the sales figures for the Airstream, that approach worked.
