Scottsdale preview: Kurtis, BMC
While Barrett-Jackson and Russo and Steele may compete for the big headlines in Scottsdale every year, plenty of other auctions will offer quality cars in Arizona this year. Take, for instance, the 1937 Kurtis-built Tommy Lee speedster, to cross the block at Gooding. The spiritual predecessor of the 1939 Kurtis Speedster and the 1946-1947 Kurtis-Omohundro, the Tommy Lee speedster also figured into a recent SIA Flashback story about Frank Kurtis’s pre-war customs. Gooding estimates it’ll sell for $250,000 to $350,000.
Over at RM, we’ve already mentioned their small fleet of concept cars headed to Arizona, but they also plan to offer the Pininfarina-styled BMC “Technical Support Vehicle,” that is, one of the race transporters BMC built on its Morris FFK 140 commercial truck chassis. This one, created as a promotional vehicle for the BMC U.S. dealer network and was part of the MG display stand at the 1964 Chicago Auto Show. RM expects it to sell for $115,000 to $145,000.
