Robert Hight’s Funny Car Explodes in Qualifying at the U.S. Nationals

Robert Hight had what may have been the ride of his life in the third round of Funny Car qualifying at the NHRA 2016 Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana. Sitting in the Number 5 qualifying spot entering that round, Hight was out in front of competitor Dave Richards when his engine exploded near the finish line, blowing the body off the car, and sending Hights’ car into the left lane, narrowly missing Richards. Hight was uninjured. He said later, “It didn’t even give me a warning. It didn’t nose over. It felt like it was trucking down pretty good like it was going to put up a number. It just all of a sudden exploded and actually blew me over into the other lane.” The team suspects a camshaft failure was the cause.
