HISTORY ASPECTS:The Douglas C-47 Skytrain affectionately known as “Night Fright” played a crucial role in the Allied operations during World War II particularly during the Normandy invasion on D-Day. Operated by the 79th Troop Carrier Squadron part of the 436th Troop Carrier Group “Night Fright” was one of many C-47s that contributed to the largest airborne assault in history. Stationed at AAF-466 in Membury England this aircraft was instrumental in ferrying troops equipment and supplies to the front lines helping to establish a foothold in France against the Nazi regime.On the night of June 5-6 1944 “Night Fright” took part in Operation Overlord the Allied invasion of Normandy. This critical mission involved dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines to secure key positions before the main invasion force landed on the beaches. The C-47s including “Night Fright” were tasked with delivering elements of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions which would play a vital role in the success of the invasion.
