Official: Global Rallycross announces 2014 schedule and $500k points fund

Global Rallycross is now known as Red Bull Global Rallycross, the fizzy-drink maker having sucked another motorsport discipline into its orbit. The series just added the Volkswagen Beetle to its field of makes and models, and the release of the 2014 season venues means we know where they can be seen.

The schedule has grown from last year’s nine events to ten, and all but one of them are standalone since ESPN cancelled all of its international X Games; GRC will join the extreme sports extravaganza when it comes to Austin, Texas on June 7 for the second round. The season begins in Barbados on May 17, joining The Stig and the Top Gear Live Stunt Driving Team; otherwise it stays in the US, criss-crossing the country and staying pretty close to the coasts except for the last round in Las Vegas.

The entry of Red Bull and other sponsors like Royal Purple and GoPro has boosted the prize fund coffers, too. There will be $500,000 up for grabs throughout the season, with drivers able to win as much as $20,000 for a victory. For the past two years, that’s the kind of amount that’s been available from supplemental sponsors like Discount Tire or Sylvania for topping points tallies over a number of races, not just one race.
