Mercury, the Man’s Car, 1967

Where exactly this street scene – which we found on the Duke University Libraries’ online archive – took place, we can only guess. The license plates appear to be California black plates, but there isn’t quite enough resolution to see them or the street sign in the distance in detail. What year it was taken is quite simple to determine as long as you’re familiar with automakers’ marketing slogans, particularly the patriarchal ones that wouldn’t fly today. What do you see here?
