Late Models Visit Angell Park for First Time (Photos and Video)

Published by Mike on

Traditionally left to the open wheel racers, Angell Park Speedway welcomed Dirt Late Models for the first time in 70 years this past Sunday.  The historic facility played host to the second event for the DiscountShopTowels.com Dirt Kings Late Model Tour.

It was a tricky test for the Late Model racers.  In the heat races drivers tested both the top and bottom grooves, but eventually it was the low groove that would pay dividends.  Rookie Late Model racer Cole Spacek grabbed the lead from the pole position and did not look back.  He was challenged on several occasions by veteran racer Justin Hirt, but Hirt was unable to mount enough of a challenge on the top line.  Jared Siefert was Third, Nick Anvelink was Fourth, and Brad Mueller rounded out the Top Five.

In addition to the Late Models’ debut, Angell Park hosted some more traditional vehicles as well.  The Badger Midget Racing Association and MSA 360 Winged Sprints were on hand to provide the more common open wheel feel.  The Wisconsin Dirt Legend Cars rounded out the evening’s card.

Four-time Badger Midget Champion Scott Hatton scored a win in the 20-lap feature.  It was Hatton’s 35th career at the track, fifth place on the all-time track’s feature win list.

Scotty Neitzel, a top 410 Sprint racer from the area, spoiled the party for the MSA 360 Sprints as he piloted the Bob Hood-owned machine to Victory Lane.

Nelson Stewart took the checkered flag in the Legend Cars.
