The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix should have shaped up to be a rout by the Mercedes-Benz team, which had Fangio and Moss out front and – at least for the first half of the race – dominant. Misfortune and mechanical troubles, however, sidelined both and gave the race to Ferrari’s Maurice Trintignant. The race’s actual legacy didn’t become apparent until a few days later, when Alberto Ascari – who dunked his Lancia in the harbor thus giving up the brief lead he held after Moss dropped out – died during a testing session at Monza, making Monaco Ascari’s last race. The couple of YouTube videos below capture some of that race’s action.
