Hemmings Find of the Day – 1971 Plymouth Road Runner
340-powered 1971 Plymouth Road Runner, with claimed numbers-matching engine and transmission for sale. From the seller’s description:
Complete 2005 rotisserie (frame off) restoration on a rust free, low mileage body (84,000 miles). This is a rare Road Runner, one of only 1,681 340 cubic inch, high performance engines that Plymouth produced for the Road Runner. All numbers matching engine and transmission with original broadcast sheet that matches the VIN number. It is all stock except for the Edelbrock manifold and valve covers and it was re-painted Hemi Orange (it was originally black vinyl over root beer brown) in 2005.
The original numbers matching 340 engine and transmission were completely rebuilt in 2005. The engine was bored 30 over with Hughes high performance camshaft, springs and lifters. It has a polished crankshaft. New items included during the 2005 restoration were a roller chain, water pump, fuel pump, all new wiring, new suspension, motor mounts, u-joints, transmission mounts, gas tank and sending unit. The heavy-duty, numbers matching transmission was rebuilt and a shift kit was added. A new, black vinyl OEM interior was added.during restoration. The rear end is a 3:55 sure grip. According to the engine builder, the compression ratio is 10 to one and the horsepower is estimated at approximately 350. In 2011, I replaced the original magnum wheels with new OEM magnum wheels and Cooper Cobra tires.
I purchased the Road Runner in 2005 from the restoration business when the speedometer showed 84,000. Since then I have only put less than a 1,000 miles on the car and it has been well maintained and garaged in a climate controlled shop.
The VIN starts with RM which is the 1971 code for Road Runner. The fifth digit H code indicates a 340 cubic inch, 4 barrel carb high performance engine.
