Hemmings Find of the Day – 1966 Ghia 450SS
It’s almost a given that a Ghia 450SS was originally owned by somebody famous – Johnny Carson reportedly bought this 1966 Ghia 450SS for sale on Hemmings.com new – so we’re more intrigued by the factory optional hardtop that comes with this car: It always seemed as though Giugiaro styled the 450SS to wear a hardtop, but it’s so uncommon to see one closed up. From the seller’s description:
The first owner of this car is claimed to have been Johnny Carson, who then gave the car to his personal pilot. This car was sold in 1995 at a Barrett Jackson auction and was part of a car museum in Boston. Both claim Johnny Carson as the first owner. The original owner’s manual has a lot of detailed hand-written maintenance notes, the type of thing a pilot would do.
Paint is very nice, body is straight and rust-free (California car), with excellent gaps; chrome is also very nice, all five Borrani wire wheels were just done and sport new tires, soft top is in fair condition, hard top is steel and in excellent condition, interior is very nice and most likely the original leather. Mechanically, she runs and drives as it should.
