Hemmings Find of the Day – 1963 Formcar Formula Vee racer
In the early 1960s, amateur racing enjoyed a surge in popularity, thanks in part to the availability of low-cost, reliable formula racers. Among the most popular series was Formula Vee, which featured open-wheel racers with tube frames and fiberglass (or aluminum) bodies, powered by Volkswagen flat-four engines. One of the earliest manufacturers of Formula Vee cars was Formcar, which began producing cars a few years before the SCCA recognized Formula Vee as a class in 1963. That makes this 1963 Formcar Mk. I Formula Vee racer for sale on Hemmings.com one of the company’s early products, and it’s perfect for the driver looking to enjoy the thrill of vintage racing on a modest budget. Though air-cooled Volkswagen components are no longer available at every junkyard, the availability of aftermarket components ensures that obtaining parts will be a non-issue, and the durable Volkswagen engine is capable of withstanding a fair amount of abuse between rebuilds. As dedicated race cars go, it really doesn’t get more trouble free than this. From the seller’s description:
Formcar Mk I, Chasis No. 63 DEN 25, 1192cc, Type I engine, Type I 4-speed gear box. Most recently raced at SOVREN events. Exciting and economical vintage Race Class. This FV is competitive, reliable and fun.
