Hemmings Find of the Day – 1961 Pontiac Tempest
Introduced for the 1961 model year, Pontiac’s Tempest was intended to be the brand’s entry-level compact. Despite these humble origins, the car featured fresh styling (that in our opinion still looks good today), a four-wheel independent suspension and a rear-mounted transaxle to improve front to rear weight distribution (and with it, handling). Though prices for many classic Pontiacs have begun to climb, Tempests remain largely affordable, especially in four-door sedan form. According to the seller, this two-owner 1961 Pontiac Tempest, for sale on Hemmings.com, boasts just 18,035 original miles and has racked up over 100 trophies during its car show career, including awards at both Pontiac-Oakland Club International and Classic Car Club of America events. Despite this, the selling price is a fraction of what one would expect to pay for a well-worn Pontiac GTO, proving that there are still attainable (and desirable) cars for those new to the hobby. From the seller’s description:
1961 Pontiac Tempest, A rare, all original 61 Tempest. This car has had only 2 owners since June 1961. 18035 yes that’s 18035 origianl miles. This car has been stored in a heated garage and only taken to car shows since the early 70′s. There is absolutely no rust. This car has won over 100 trophies at various car shows including a 1st place @ POCI and Classic Car Club of America.
