Hemmings Find of the Day – 1939 Divco
Divcos have gained in popularity in recent years, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to find one to restore, as we see from this 1939 Divco for sale on Hemmings.com, reportedly one of 140 built for the Helms Bakery in California. While various exotic race cars are often called breadvans, I think it’s high time these rare trucks took that nomenclature back, if only because they look like a giant loaf of bread. From the seller’s description:
They were designed and built only for the Helms Bakery located in Culver City Ca. These trucks were driven all over Southern California selling bread and pastries door to door. Each truck had a very distinctive horn that the driver would sound. These horns are very rare and are almost impossible to find. This truck has it’s original horn and it is in excellent condition. The truck runs and has it’s original running gear. There is some surface rust around the nose and tail. The truck has a clean title. This is one of very few chances you will ever have to own a icon of early Southern California. This is one of 140 built and it is very rare one comes up for sale in this condition. This truck is in great condition as the photos clearly show.
