Happy birthday, Corvette!
All the hoopla surrounding the 60th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette boils down to today; according to General Motors, the first Corvettes went into production on Tuesday, June 30, 1953, in the Flint, Michigan, assembly plant (using bodies produced by Ashtabula, Ohio-based Molded Fiberglass Companies), just a few months after GM first showed the Corvette January 17 at the Motorama in New York City. Just 300 Polo White Corvette roadsters left the plant that year; production shifted to St. Louis the next year and then to Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1981. To celebrate, Chevrolet released a few archive photos of the Flint production line, which include some fascinating details.
