Greenville, North Carolina, 1960
Typically, these carspotting exercises of ours represent singular moments in time, frozen for us to examine like a fly in amber. We can guess at a lot of what’s going on in the photos and start to piece together the story, but to get a clearer idea, we could use a little more context, like perhaps a second photo of the same place at about the same time, as we see with these two shots of Greenville, North Carolina’s Fifth and Evans streets, dated November 1960, as found on East Carolina University’s Digital Collections. Which photo preceded the other, we’re not sure, but perhaps there’s some clues in the scene. What do you see here?
