Curtis Coulter’s 1969 Mercury Cyclone

When we heard this monster backing out of the trailer at the Winternationals in Pomona last year, we were expecting a Pro Gas or similar tube-chassis and fiberglass wonder.
When we heard this monster backing out of the trailer at the Winternationals in Pomona last year, we were expecting a Pro Gas or similar tube-chassis and fiberglass wonder. Instead, Curtis Coulter showed us a 57,000-original-mile, 428CJ-powered, four-speed ’69 Mercury Cyclone that his father purchased new from a Ford dealer in Huntington, Indiana. Now, Curtis runs the car in Stock Eliminator with help from his father, uncle, and John Calvert from Calvert Racing. The original 428-inch Cobra Jet engine has been tuned using parts from Insane Power in Henderson, Nevada, and Keith Craft racing heads. Curtis still uses a four-speed transmission, although now it is a Jerico. Curtis has numerous class wins, a Stock Eliminator championship, and he even set a national record in D/Stock with a 10.68 at 124.50 mph.
