Gerald Lum is a self-professed old guy. A good part of the 70 years he’s spent on Earth has been devoted to making his car run quicker. Specifically, the last four decades have been spent experimenting, modifying, and generally abusing his ’71 Z28.

Gerald Lum is a self-professed old guy. A good part of the 70 years he’s spent on Earth has been devoted to making his car run quicker. Specifically, the last four decades have been spent experimenting, modifying, and generally abusing his ’71 Z28. You can do the math if you like, but we’ll save you the effort; Gerald bought this Z28 right off the showroom floor in 1971 and has been rubbing on it ever since. Autocross racing has begun to catch on with car crafters and the street car set ever since the Pro Touring movement began to take root more than a decade ago. For those of you who may not know, autocrossing is a single-car, timed race around a parking lot course defined by orange cones. It looks easy until you try it. While the newbies are just now realizing how much fun these parking-lot wars have become, Gerald knows all too well. He’s been pushing this Z28 around the cones for nearly the entire time he’s owned the F-body.
