Savvy Brooklyn hot rodder Vinny Santomarco bought his first car at age 16, a ’55 Chevy for the princely sum of $5. Yeah, that’s what I said, just five measly Washingtons. It was the mid-’60s, and at that time he was going to nearby Grady Technical High School, learning the trade that would someday help him with his burgeoning passion for repairing cars and building hot rods. He didn’t quite have a driver’s license yet, but he did already possess the appetite and the practicality of an experienced car aficionado. And now, amazingly enough, the street-savvy teenager was a car owner to boot.
